Nicole Hartley

MBA Director and Associate Professor/Researcher, UQ

Nicole Hartley is a service technology and digital media researcher and associate professor with the UQ Business School at the University of Queensland. She is also Director of the UQ Business School MBA program. Nicole is passionate about understanding decision making in consumer contexts, particularly how it relates to new technology and digital services and messaging. Nicole has taught and worked extensively in advertising and marketing in both Australia and in London.

Career & Background

What inspired you to do what you are doing now?

Surprisingly, I never had a passion to be an academic ???? From my undergraduate studies I followed my passion for marketing working for various companies ranging from large corporations through to startups, nonprofits and government agencies.

I always found working in these roles challenging and full of opportunities. The opportunities then led me back to academia where I took on the challenge of a PhD and found my passion in understanding and exploring how we (consumers) make decisions – especially in relation to technology!

What was your journey and where are you headed in your career right now?

I’m the MBA Director and senior lecturer in marketing and advertising for the UQ Business School.

Prior to finding my home back in academia I worked in marketing management roles across various sectors (education, online, art and culture, information systems, hospitality) in both Australia and the UK.

I’ve always made the best of opportunities that have presented themselves and focused on building relationships. Who knows where they will take me…

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

The person who most inspired me personally was my year 10-12 English teacher Mrs Mitchell. She was a hippy at heart and knew every word to every Bob Dylan song ever written…and she made us dance in class!

Mostly she made you feel that as a woman you could do anything, be anything….you just had to believe in yourself! Pretty powerful!
